Course Description:

Portadown Golf Club was founded in 1900, and has all the attributes attributed to a mature course of its vintage, although the present 18-holes date from 1974. It is festooned with tree-lined fairways bunkers and water coming into play on several holes. The River Bann comes into play especially on the on the 452 metres 9th where the tee shot is played over the River. The Bann again becomes a magnet on the 14th and 17th when its inviting water comes into play all the way up the right-hand-side.

By no means an easy course measuring 5,575 metres off the white stakes with a Par of 70 and a standard scratch of 69, whereas the ladies is 5,136 metres with a Par of 73 and a standard scratch to match. The course record was set by A. Polle as far back as 29th August 1996 even with the strident advances of golf equipment in the meantime it still stands.

After what has to be an enjoyable and memorable days golf, take some time to relax and saver the clubhouse facilities and meet the members who always extend a warm Ulster hand of friendship to visitors.

Club History

Instituted 1894 affiliated 1902.

There is some confusion as to when Portadown Golf Club was first founded. The "Belfast Newsletter", 2nd March, 1895 records "The members of this club held their annual meeting in the Young Men’s Institution. There was a large attendance, thus testifying to the healthy interest, which is taken in the club by the young men of the town. The chair was occupied by Mr. John Lutton, Captain" It gives the President as Charles Johnston J. P, the Hon. Secretary as Mr. Waugh and the Treasurer, as Mr. T. Alexander.

The original course was at Drumcree, when it moved to Mahon in 1919 and to its present location at Carrickbracke in 1934, where an eighteen-hole course was officially opened in 1936. During the Second World War, nine holes were given over to grow flax and potatoes and it wasn’t until 1974 that it reverted to eighteen holes again. Portadown celebrated its centenary year in the Millennium.
