| Course Description: |
Until 1992, Adare Manor Golf
Club was the most picturesque 9-hole golf course I had the pleasure of playing.
As with many other Golf Clubs throughout the country the demand was such that
it was decided to extend to 18-holes.
The late Eddie Hackett was retained to extend
the course and in typical Hackett style he married the old with the new to create
a magnificent 5,706, yard Par 69 with a standard scratch of 69.
Adare Manor has produced many fine golfers,
the most famous being Jackie Harrington who was capped for Ireland many times,
but his finest hour came when he won the Irish Close Championship at Ballybunion
in 1979.
Adare Manor celebrated its
centenary in the Millennium with the erection of a 5,000 year-old bog oak sculpture
at the back of the 18th green. They also buried a time capsule at the base of
the sculpture with the intention of resurrecting it in the year 2050. One wonders
what the world will be like then? |

| Club History |
Instituted 1900 affiliated 1932.
Adare Manor is first mentioned in the Irish Golfer on 5th December
1900 "where Ben Sayers laid out a private course for this enthusiastic
gentleman (Lord Dunraven)".
A later account in "Golf Illustrated" on 21st November, 1902, describes
the nine holes of the course and gives a full account of the origins of the
club. It states "The Club was instituted in September 1900, but the course
had been opened two years previously as a private one. The membership is now
close on 60 and the management vested in a committee appointed by Lord Dunraven" |
