Course Description:

Situated in Daingean, Co. Offaly, this oasis of golfing excellence in the midlands has marked itself down as one of the most invigorating courses on the Irish sporting Landscape. Affiliated to the G.U.I., Castle Barna is a most enjoyable 18-hole course. Laid-out on rolling parkland with plenty of mature trees, natural streams and easy-going terrain, which provides a great challenge for all.

Host to the Golfing Union of Ireland’s Millennium Pierce Purcell Shield is proof of the course’s testing features. The nature of the course is a mixture of parkland terrain interspersed with subtle water hazards, which challenge even the best of golfers. Hospitality, warmth and friendliness are what characterise a round of golf at Castle Barna. When you come off the course the charming old-world clubhouse exudes its own welcoming atmosphere. Castle Barna is a popular venue for members, visitors and societies alike.

Members Achievements

2005 Lady Captain Kathleen Elliott and her Captain’s Prize winner Nell Scally qualified in the Volkswagen/Irish Independent Lady Captain’s Classic in this scotch foursomes format. It was off to the National Finals at The Heritage Golf Club on Monday 3rd October where they were paired with the Slieve Russell pair of Collette Ann Harte and Maura McClaffey.

Martin Furlong was awarded the Druids Glen Irish Independent Golf Personality for the month of June in 2002. Martin received the reward for completing 217 holes of golf in an incredible 24-houres on his home course.
On the 27th of May 2001, Martin Furlong played a 130-hole marathon around Castle Barna he said "I wanted to set a record here and to earn a few bob for the Offaly Hospice," to my way of thinking there must be an easier way of doing it. Martin is 60-years of age and playing off 15 walked every hole and completed his marathon in 16 hours and 25 minutes. The amazing thing is he "only" set out to play 100-holes. Well, done Martin.

Castle Barna won the Leinster section of The Bulmers Pierce Purcell Shield at St. Anne's, in July, 1999, beating Mount Wolseley, 3.5-1.5 in the final. They were drawn against Warrenpoint G. C. in the Semi-Final at Royal Portrush, on 16th September 1999. The team was Tony McCormack with Eddie Bowes, Michael Cahill with Kenneth Sheridan, Noel Guing with Mark Nolan, Ger Meehan with Hugh Meehan, and Norman Hannigan with John Fleming.

91 years young Paddy Mulldowney had a hole-in-one on the 158 m "Castle" 5th, index 8, in the Millennium year. Maybe there is hope for the rest of us who have never had one!
