Course Description:

Designed by Lionel Hewson, Thurles Golf Club is a 6,465 yards par 72 with a standard scratch of 71 off the back tees. The first thing that will strike you as you play this fine mature tree lined course, is you go under the main Cork-Thurles road to play the first tee. The two opening holes, are par 5, the first is particularly intimidating with out of bounds all the way up the left, being 488 yards index 6. The feature holes are the four par threes, the best being the 212 yard 11th to a small target well bunkered. The 18th is another par 5 with out of bounds all the way up the left, which has destroyed many a good card.

Thurles has a fine clubhouse with excellent catering and the friendliness you will find in the bar will make you think that Tipperary win the All-Ireland every year! If you are feeling up to it there are two championship squash courts in the clubhouse. Voted the No. 86-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008.

Club History

Instituted 1909, affiliated 1912. The early minutes of the club are missing. "The Golfing Annual" of 1909-10 has an institution date of 1st January, 1909. There were 75 members and the Captain was R. H. Spratt, the Hon. Secretary was S. R. Thorp. The course was a nine hole, and a mile and a half from Thurles station. The annual subscription was a guinea for men and ten shillings for ladies. The club moved around somewhat in the early years. The club records show the following locations; six holes at Loughtagalla, nine holes at Leugh, twelve holes at Dovea.

Lionel Hewson wrote in the "Irish Golf", in January 1944, "Once I laid out the nine hole course on a pleasant site at Thurles. It was a pleasant visit and led to a lunch at the college with Fr. O’Connor as host. Now it is good news to hear that the club has bought Turtulla House and lands the old course and some of the newly acquired land will be sold for £6,000."

Location

Located 1 mile out the Cork road on your left hand-side coming out of Thurles.
