Course Description:

Shannon Golf Club is the venue for the European Men’s Senior Team Championship from 12th – 18th August 2008. In excess of 25,000 club members from every golf club in Ireland will set out to win one of the five sets of medals on offer. Only the Provincial Champions in the Senior Cup, Barton Shield, Junior Cup, Jimmy Bruen Shield and Pierce Purcell Shield will compete over these three days. If you love the game of golf then a visit to Shannon Golf Club is a must over these days of excitement and outrageous exploits of commitment to their clubs can be experienced.

Shannon is a highly rated parkland championship course incorporating plenty of water hazards, bunkers and tree-lined fairways and the length they have made the holes provides a stern test for even the longest of hitters.  The course has been, graced by Ballesteros, Norman, Faldo, Lyle, Langer and Ryder Cup Hero, Christy O’Connor Jnr., was once the professional here. Its feature hole has to be the 17th, a 224-yard, par 3, which has a 185-yard carry over the Shannon Estuary.  You are assured of a warm welcome here.Voted the No. 67-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008. Shannon was voted joint No. 28 Parkland/Inland Course in Ireland by "Backspin" Irelands leading Golf magazine in 2008, the panel comprised of a selection of 52 Professional and amateur golfers throughout Ireland.

Members Achievements

Heather Nolan was selected on the Munster ILGU Team for the Interprovincial's played at Ballybunion Golf Club from 18th to 20th August 2004. Heather was selected on the Irish Ladies team for the Home Internationals where they retained the trophy and recorded their 7th victory, played at Royal Porthcawl from 8th to 10th September 2004.

Heather Nolan was selected on the Irish Junior Girls team competing in the European Lady Junior Team Championship in Moscow in July 2002. She was on the Munster Girls' team in the Smurfit Interprovincial Championship at Enniscrone Golf Club from the 18th to the 20th of April 2001.
A. Jones qualified for the National Finals of the Irish Times-Mitsubishi Motors Women's Masters. She returned 32 points in the semi-final at Glasson Golf Hotel & Country Club on the 23rd of August 2001. Then it was on to Galway Bay Golf & Country Club for the Final on 13th September.

Barry, J. Larkin, M. Drysdale, A. Leahy, J. Marnell, D, O’Brien and C. Hackett, they were managed by. J. O’Brien,

Shannon Golf Club won the Munster Final of the Pierce Purcell Shield in 1996, when the team was Harry Shally, Brian Quinn, Gerry Breen, Thomas McMahon, Alan Leahy, Michael Deasy, Martin Purtill, Ger O’Shea, Noel Morgan, John Culleton, Chris Harrigan, Jimmy O’Brien, Richie Whelan, Darren Keane, Eugene Logan, Christy Sherlock, Des McDonnell and Joe McGrath, they were captained by Denis O’Gorman.

They won the Munster Final of the Jimmy Bruen  Shield in 1994 when the team was Tommy Aghir, Seamus Doyle, Jim Corr, Gary Purtill, Gerry O’Reilly, John Jones, Gerry Sweeney, Tony Keane, Niall McMahon, Lawy Halpin Jnr. Brian Power, Don Fitzgerald, Dennis O’Brien, Tony Reidy, Lwey Halpin Snr. Jim O’Brien and Noel Morgan, they were managed by Mick McInerny.

The Ladies of Shannon won the Intermediate League in 1997, when the team was Eileen McNamara, Ann Jones, Margaret Hope, Trrish Taylor, Liz O’Shea and they were captained by Joan Green. 

C. Moylan was elected to the council of the Munster Branch of the GUI for 2001.

16-year old Heather Nolan, was selected on the ILGU Senior B squad in November, 2000 and she was on the Irish Girls' team for the Home Internationals at Downfield G. C., Dundee, from 15th to the 17th August, 2000. She has to be an inspiration to all young girls taking up this wonderful game. In only her second year playing, having started with a handicap of 30, she in now down to 6 (at time of writing). She won the Ulster Championship at Bangor G. C. when accounting for Michelle Holmes in the final. Then on to Mount Wolseley for the Leinster title, where she beat Louise Murphy in the decider. Heather was two under par when the match concluded.
