Course Description: |
Rumour has it golf has been played at Moyola Park since the early 1900's but it was not until 1976 when Lord Moyola retained Don Patterson to design this magnificent 18 hole parkland course. Don was Ronan Rafferty's mentor at the time, for those of you who are too young to remember Ronan and can only identify him on TV doing commentary for American channels, Ronan was one of the great Irish amateur and professional golfers. He is the only Irish player to top the European Order of Merit. Sure Daren and Padraig are knocking on the door but they have yet to do it.
Moyola Park is a spectacular Championship Parkland Course measuring 6,519 yards with a Par 71 and a standard scratch to match off the blue stakes, the ladies is somewhat shorter at 5,638 yards Par 72 and standard scratch to match. The course record is 67 shot by Randal Evans. The signature hole at Moyola Park is the 8th at 421 yards "The River Hole" is a 90-degree dogleg requiring careful club selection off the tee and having achieved that you are confronted with an even more daunting shot over the River Moyola to a well-protected green set just back from the river. The finishing hole is a Par 5 at 562 yards will test both the skill and nerve of the best of golfers, with a narrow tree-lined fairway, it requires accuracy with every shot.
The clubhouse is steeped in history as it was once the retirement home of Admiral Lord Graves, he who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. However for today's it provides every facility he or she can require. |
