Course Description:

Kirkistown Castle is sometimes overshadowed by its illustrious neighbour Royal Co. Down, but it should not be underrated as it is the design of one of golf's most famous architects James Braid left his mark on this Links that has been in existence since 1902. The 2nd and 10th holes are played to elevated greens, which are a feature of this Links. It is clamed that 15 "Braid's Hole" at 321 metres is one of the hardest Par 4 to be found anywhere in Ireland. Kirkistown is a true and fair test of golf for the low and high handicapper alike. As a true Links Kirkistown is playable at anytime during the year it has a fine clubhouse with full bar and full catering facilities where the visitor is extended a warm Ulster hand of welcome.

Club History

Instituted 1902, affiliated 1903. As with many other Irish golf clubs, the early records are missing. The club credits the foundation to seven gentlemen from Portaferry. However; "The Golfing Annual " 1903-4, gives its Instituted date as 3rd September 1902, with J. Green as Captain, and F. M. Allen as Hon. Secretary. It had fifty-eight members who paid an annual subscription of one guinea. It goes on to state, "the course is of nine-holes, about four miles from Portaferry, where there is a hotel. The course commands lovely views of the Isle of Man, Mull of Galloway, etc. and is an excellent seaside green"Kirkistown went eighteen-holes in 1929.

Members Achievements

Kirkistown Castle won the Irish Mixed Foursomes at Portstewart G. C. in 1986.
