Club History |
Instituted 1905, affiliated 1906. Hermitage was first known as the County Dublin Golf Club, this name was objected to by the Royal Dublin Golf Club, on the grounds it might cause confusion. The name was changed to Hermitage in 1906. The founding Captain, Mr. James Walsh, died in his year in office. In 1904 a group of members of Lucan Golf Club decided to form their own club and leased land for a nine-hole course, Ballydowd, close to the present course, in 1905. When the club wanted to extend to eighteen-holes they were unable to come to an arrangement with the landlord. A member of the club, Mr. James Crozier, agreed to let some of his land. Nine-holes were laid out by James McKenna, the professional at Carrickmines, and in 1907 it extended to an eighteen-hole course. The GUI selected Hermitage for the Irish Close Championship in 1914, won by Lionel Munn 10-8 over 36 holes.
During the Great War, Mr. Crozier, handed over the old mansion for use as a convalescent home for disabled soldiers. At the same time the, club came under pressure to hand over the land for tillage, under the emergency legislation of the time. The club was lucky to survive at the time.

Young Steven Davin (16) won the Junior Scratch Cup at Blackbush Golf Club on Sunday 16 June 2007.Hermitage Golf Club reached the All-Ireland Final of the Irish Senior Cup Final at Rosslare Golf Club on Saturday 17th September 2005. It has been 1926 since Hermitage last won the Blue Riband of Irish Golf and the members turned up in their droves to support their for the Semi-Final and Final.
On the Friday they were drawn against the Munster Champions Limerick Golf Club. Brian O’Connor was out first against Irish International Pat Murphy and had a 2 and 1 win over the Limerick man. Greg Bowden recorded a 2-hole win over Michael O’Kelly. The 3rd match of Sean O’Flaherty against Dermot Morris ended in a half. Greg Massey had a very convincing win over Michel Kemmy with a 7 and 6 margin. With the points in the bag Alan Dowling went 2 and 1 down to Greg Vaughan.
Hermitage came up against a star-studded North West Golf Club in the All-Ireland Final, the Donegal club had Brian McElhinney the reigning British Amateur Champion, Ireland’s only selection on the 2005 Walker Cup, the Irish Close Champion and past winner of he European Individual winner and Irish International Michael McGeady on their team. In what was a nail biting Final Brian O’Connor won his match against Paul Van Dessell, Greg Bowden lost to Brian McElhinney, Greg Massey lost to Michael McGeady and Alan Dowling had a convincing win over Pauric Og O’Flaherty. So it was all down to the final match of Sean O’Flaherty against Garrett Mallon, Garrett played two outrageous chips on the 17th and 18th to clinch the match with a 1-hole victory and deprive Hermitage of bridging the gap of 79 years, however I for one am confident that it will not be long before Hermitage win this coveted title when one looks at how their young players are achieving on the golf courses.
Greg Bowden was selected on the Winning Leinster team for the Interprovincial Matches played at Portmarnock Golf Club from 11th to 13th August 2004. I watched Stephen suffer during the year, he looked as safe as a house coming home in the Irish Close at Co. Sligo. Until Gavin McNeill sank a unbelievable putt on the 17th. Then in the final of the South of Ireland Championship, he came up against Justin Keogh who, playing the best golf I have ever seen or am likely to see. Stephen was 3-under when the match finished on the 13th. I was more than delighted to see this fine young man collect the European Championship. Stephen was the only new cap on the Irish six-man team that played in the European Team Championship at Ljunghusens G.C., Sweden from July 3rd to the 7th he was also selected on the six-man Irish team for the European Strokeplay championship in Denmark from August 22nd to the 25th 2001 which of course he won. The team was Garry Cullen +2 Stephen+1, Hugh Hanley+1 and my son Shane the high handicapper 4. Garry won the long drive, Stephen nearest the hole and they finished in 5th place. The prize was 4 rounds of golf at Druid's. When I gave the voucher to Shane, he said "That's great Dad, now we can play it off the back stakes".
