Club History |
Instituted 1916, affiliated 1919. The original proposed name for Howth Golf Club, was Kilrock Golf Club. The provisional committee in 1916 was headed by Mr. Gaisford St. Laurence and Rt. Hon. Justice Boyd. Mr. Barcroft, the Secretary of the Royal Dublin Golf Club, laid out a nine-hole course on the Hill of Howth. Mr. Butson, a former employee of the Jameson family and a keen golfer, opened the course as a proprietary venture. Members were invited to join with the annual fee at two guineas. It would appear to have had a slow start and the first Captain was Eddie Stuart, elected in 1916. It was not until Mr. Butson’s interest was bought out in 1918, that the club established itself on a firm footing. James Braid, who won the British Open five times, laid out an additional nine holes in 1926, for a fee of 28 guineas. W. T. Cosgrave, as President of the executive council, opened the new holes in June, 1929. |
