Stackstown Golf Club won the 10th All-Ireland J. B. Carr Diamond Trophy at the picturesque Woodenbridge Golf Club on Sunday 18th September 2005 when they beat Galway Golf Club in the final by 4-matches to 1, making it a disastrous week for the Galway club and county.Galway having lost the All-Ireland Hurling final to Cork the previous Sunday, they sent three teams to the Bulmers Cups & Shields to Rosslare Golf Club having won the Connacht Finals in the Barton Shield, Senior Cup and Junior cup, who sadly failed to collect yet another green pennant to their very large collection of national championships.
The Stackstown team beat Munster Champions Nenagh Golf Club by 3½ matches to 1½ in the Semi-Final and met Galway in the All-Ireland Final in this very prestigious championship, with over 180 clubs participating, restricted to players over 60.
The Stackstown team was lead by Pat Malone & Tony O’Mahoney who won their match against Joe Corless & Bill Burke on the 18th, next up was John Kavanagh & Sean O’Dwyer against Bosco McDermott (he of he Galway 3-in-a-row 60’ team) & Mick Dunne who won their match on the first play-off hole. They were followed by Tom O’Donohue & John Mahony who halved with Sean Hosty (Sean was Secretary of the Connacht GUI for many years) & Tom Ford, next on the tee were Pat McNiallais & Patsy O’Connor against Michael O’Hagan & Des Feely who finished their match on the 18th.
