Course Description
.
Tralee moved to its present location in 1983, from its 9-hole course at the Barrow. The lands were purchased for £170,000 and the members knew they had something very special. The retained the services of Arnold Palmer and his chief architect, Ed Seay, to develop the magnificent dune-lands. As a result of the natural terrain and Palmer’s skills Tralee ranks among the premier clubs in Ireland. There were some problems in getting the greens to thrive in the early stages, Arnold is justifiably proud of his first design in Europe. Overlooking the Atlantic with a mixture of pastureland, rugged cliffs, and of course duneland, the location was extensively used for the filming of "Ryan’s Daughter".

The outward nine resemble parkland by the sea, terrain, the 542 m par-5 index 2 second is along the coast with a double dog-leg to the right. Followed by the 183, m par-3 with a cave below the green that featured in "Ryan’s Daughter". The inward nine are pure links, with some magnificent holes the 417 m par 4 index 1 12th will test the very best of golfers, even if you are in pole position off the tee the only place to put your second is on the green. The 181 m 16th will be remembered long after you have departed this part of the country "kissed by God".

Visitors to Tralee Golf Club can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome and a challenging round of golf. Societies are welcome and group rates are available . Voted the No. 13-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008. Tralee was voted No. 17 Links/Shoreline Course in Ireland by "Backspin" Irelands leading Golf magazine in 2008, the panel comprised of a selection of 52 Professional and amateur golfers throughout Ireland.

Club History

Instituted 1896, affiliated 1907. It is of interest to record that the early Tralee course had two courses, a nine-hole course close to Fenit Station, seven miles from Tralee, and an eighteen-hole half a mile from Castlegregory station, sixteen miles from Tralee. The club had 120 members and the annual subscription was ten shillings. There were two changes before 1898-the club membership had fallen by 40 and the course at Fenit had been closed and a new nine-hole course was opened at Sportsfield, Tralee.

It would appear the early club went into decline and the "Golf Illustrated" on the 22nd February 1907, reports "During the past week we have learned of the establishment of two new clubs. Tralee in Co. Kerry is at last turning its eyes from the scenery to the golf ball. Land has been secured close to the county town, sufficient members (120) have been enrolled to make the club financially b. At a public meeting last week the golf club was organised" C.H. Hardy and C. F. Dowling were the Hon. Secretaries. C. F. Dowling was a link to the original club as he was listed as Hon. Secretary in 1898. Lionel Hewson recorded laying out an eighteen-hole course at Oak Park Demesne during the troubles. The year was 1923.

Hewson later records in 1948 that the club had bought land at Lasseugh. The club's final move was to its present location at the Burrow, Ardfert. The course is the first course designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer, outside of the USA.
