Course Description: |
Gowran Park before the construction of the new golf course, was best known for its racecourse, and the hometown of Ireland's best hurler, D. J. Carey. Jeff Howes, the well-known Golf Course architect tells us: "When Gowran Park first contacted them and informed them of their intention to develop a golf course at Gowran, their immediate thoughts were that any final design would obviously need to retain the race-track and, therefore, would limit their scope. They could not have been more wrong. This site is full of natural features, which will greatly enhance their design and will surprise even those who think that a great golf course cannot possibly be developed alongside a racetrack.
The five-holes located within the racetrack will feature two lakes and the gently rolling terrain is being transformed, by the planting of gorse and lakeside vegetation. The remaining holes are set among the mature and extensive woodlands for which Gowran Park racetrack has long, been known for. The setting and design layout will result in golf holes unique in character and which will require a wide variety of shots. Water too will play a part in nine-holes. Gowran open for play, in June 2001. Voted the No. 84-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008. |
