Course Description:

June 23rd 2001 was a red-letter day in the history of Nenagh golf club, when the president of the Golfing Union of Ireland performed the official opening of the newly developed course. Founded in 1929 as a nine-hole course, the club has made tremendous progress since, culminating in the present layout, the result of dedication and hard work by officers and committees over several years. Much praised by members and visitors alike, Course Architect, Patrick Merrigan, has designed a very fair test for every golfer, irrespective of ability or experience. Thirteen new sand-based undulating are guarded by intimidating bunkers and are providing a challenge for even the most fastidious of putters.

Nenagh has always been unique by reason of the nature of its soil and the excellent drainage and firm surfaces allowing play all year round. The re-designed course is fast maturing and is set to become one of Ireland’s most popular courses. Amenities at the club include a practice area, chipping and putting greens, and full bar and catering facilities. Professional, Robert Kelly, provides a well-stocked shop and is available for lessons and has clubs and buggies for hire.

Club History

Instituted 1892, affiliated 1929. Although the Nenagh golf club gives its foundation date as 1929 and its first AGM held on 23rd February 1929, with Lord Dunally as President, here is plenty of evidence that golf was played at Nenagh as early as 1892. The Golfing Annual 1895-96 gives a foundation date as 13th October 1892, with H. Waring as Captain, J.W.C. Barry as the Hon. Secretary and the President was Lord Dunally. It had 49 members, 20 of which were Ladies. This club would appear to have survived until the Great War when the course was given over for cultivation. As early as 1920 the club began to reform and was up and running again by 1929.
